Your Twice Annual Dental Checkup Is Essential for Maintaining Oral Health
The American Dental Associations recommends that you visit your dentist twice a year for a routine cleaning and dental checkup. This simple appointment helps clean dangerous tartar, cleans and polishes teeth and provide early detection for potential issues like gum disease and oral cancer.
The early part of the appointment consists of a basic cleaning where the hygienist will use a variety of dental tools to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth and along the gums. Tartar can be very hard for you to remove at home and if it is left unchecked can lead to serious issues like tooth decay and gum disease.
The hygienist will keep an eye out for any possible signs of tooth decay or other problems. Be sure to let your dental team know if you have any issues or concerns about a particular tooth.
Once your teeth are thoroughly cleaned of tartar the hygienist will polish your teeth. If you have deeply stained teeth you should ask your hygienist about your tooth whitening options.
The dentist will then check your teeth and gums for any signs of decay or gum disease. This might include X-rays to assess other factors including bone health. The dentist will then perform a basic oral cancer screening, checking your tongue, throat, face, head and neck looking for any signs of infection, swelling or cancer.
